Senate Week in Review: Gerrymandering reform hearing scheduled |
|
SPRINGFIELD,
Ill.
– A hearing on gerrymandering reform that had been delayed twice before, is
finally set to be held July 29, in
Chicago.
Gerrymandering is the practice of
drawing legislative district boundaries to give an advantage to a particular
candidate or party.
Illinois
has been sharply criticized for its system of drawing state legislative and
congressional district boundaries because it allows politicians to pick their
voters, rather than allowing the voters to pick their representatives.

Millner calls for temporary budget |
|
SPRINGFIELD,
Ill. – State Senator John Millner
(R-Carol Stream) joined Senate Republican colleagues to call for a temporary
budget on Tuesday to allow the governor and legislative leaders to have more
time to find a solution to the state’s budget crisis.
“While this isn’t the preferred solution, this is a
compromise I believe everyone should agree on,” Sen. Millner said. “We cannot
allow human services to fall through the cracks because we are unable to reach
a resolution on the state’s finances.”
The temporary budget would last a month – or longer – using
the FY 2008 funding levels, which was the last budget that was closest to being
balanced, Sen. Millner said, and it would allow for human and social service
providers to continue helping those most in need.

Millner responds to indictment of Blagojevich |
|
Statement from State Senator John Millner (R-Carol Stream)
concerning the Federal indictment of Rod Blagojevich:
“While the indictment of former Governor Rod Blagojevich
brings no surprises after the volume of evidence we examined during his
impeachment trial, it’s important that we be looking toward the future of how
we can prevent such acts from occurring again.
The people of Illinois
deserve an end to ‘business as usual’ and real reforms. We need to put an end
to ‘pay-to-play’ contracts as well as political hirings and firings. Without
addressing the root problems that enabled Blagojevich to exploit his position
for personal gain, we’ll always be vulnerable to the cycle repeating
itself.”
